For Christmas 2007, Best Buy offered a different type of gift card. This gift card doubles as programmable scrolling LED mini-sign.
So I bought a bunch of them for the value I put on the gift card: $1. I programmed them with my family’s names and used them as gift tags!
This was shot at my in-laws for our big family Christmas 2007 celebration.

I saw a home depot gift card worth $610 but he is okay with $500 cash.

It sounds like your plan have things covered. You make the purchase with the gift card before paying him will ensure that the gift card is okay.
The only challenge I can see is if the deal falls through and he (and his buddies) knows that you have $500 cash with you. May want to take a friend or two of your own.
